Now in it's 53rd Year the Mattara Festival is one of the Hunter's premier community-based festivals.
It was the year 1961, that this lovely festival came into being
The word Mattara, meaning hand, was inspired by the language of the Awabakal Aboriginal Dialect used by former natives of the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas. Mattara was selected as the title for the festival, denoting the hand of friendship that Newcastle extends to visitors as well as the City’s hand of industry.
Mattara’s Festival over the years has been a wonderful launch pad for all local upcoming artists and performers; Mattara’s program encompasses many musical elements, sport, traditional crafts, performing and visual arts, sculptures, workshops, displays and exhibits, information stalls and much more.
The Mattara Festival of Newcastle celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2011 and is still today one of the Hunter’s premier community-based festivals.
Over the past few years financial support has been hard to gain, so in order to keep Mattara alive for the community of Newcastle & surrounds Mattara is working together with Newcastle Panthers to help make this happen
